Well what a year 2017 has been for gaming! I’m willing to say that this has been one of the best years (if not THE best year) in gaming history! With so much quality AND variety, there has been something for everyone to enjoy.
Constructing this year’s top 10 has been so much fun, but so very difficult, as I’ve had to make some real painful cuts! Some games that easily would’ve made it into my top 10 in any other year have missed out, and some games that deserve a top 5 spot, had to simply be pushed down. But at least it’s cram-packed with absolute quality!
But to me, this year has all been about 3 games in particular, which I call ‘The Big 3’, and these 3 are great examples of gaming perfection (or very, very close to it). They were head and shoulders above everything else, and anyone who played any one of them, would’ve had a good year for sure!
Now it’s with great joy, enthusiasm, and excitement that I present to you my top 10 games of 2017!

We start off the list with the third entry of the Danganronpa series. While this entry may not be as strong as the first two, it still captures that same intrigue and shock value. There were many games vying for this tenth spot, but I feel this game deserves a spot because it managed to keep me entertained the entire way through.

A new open-world game from Guerrilla Games. This is their first attempt at the genre and passed with flying colours. A fascinating world, thrilling combat, and plenty of killer robots await!

In one of the most bizarre match-ups in gaming, Mario and his new Rabbid heroes team up to take out the troublesome Rabbid villains. A deeply fun strategy game and possibly my favourite game to come out of Ubisoft!

In this sequel to Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, you continue Talion’s tale in his conquest of Mordor. Build up an Orc army and dominate each region in spectacular fashion. Great action, interesting side quests, and more Orcs you can swing a sword at!

The sequel to 2013’s smash hit SteamWorld Dig somehow manages to surpass the original! With super fun and addictive gamplay, this is must for any 2D platforming fans. Also happens to be my favourite Indie game of the year.

Now for the start of my top 5 games for 2017! In the tradition of the Souls/Bloodbourne games, comes the Japanese-themed take on the genre. Take the fight to the terrifying Yokai in this exciting and challenging experience that’ll keep you on your toes from start to finish.

The latest Resident Evil game in the classic series is a return to its roots, and a great return to form! The scares are back, the bullets are few, and the core gameplay that made this series great is as fun as ever. As a long-time fan, I’m just as happy as anyone to see this series back on its feet!

The latest entry in the iconic Legend of Zelda series sees the biggest departure from the series to date! For the first time, this series goes open world, and at the same time revolutionises the genre. This masterpiece takes game design to the next level and sets a new high benchmark.

Mario is back again in his greatest adventure yet! With so much originality and creativity packed into just one game, Super Mario Odyssey was very close to being Games Whisperer’s Game of the Year. 3D platformers do not get any better than this, and this game alone is worth getting a Nintendo Switch for!

I really do think this has been one of the best years ever in gaming. With so many great games, there’s normally one, or maybe two, games per year that I’d call a masterpiece and an ‘all-time great’. This year we got THREE of them, and the best gaming experience of the year for me came from Persona 5!
For most of 2017 I felt this would be my Game of the Year, that is until Super Mario Odyssey came along and really made it difficult to decide. I ultimately chose Persona 5- an epic JRPG that will stay with you well after you’ve finished it, and I believe Persona 5 will greatly challenge The Witcher 3 as the best game of the generation!
